Primary Topic: Metal-Organic Frameworks: Synthesis and Applications
Methods
In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was employed to analyze the samples. NMR spectra were obtained using a Bruker AV-II 300 spectrometer operating at a frequency of 300.1 MHz for proton (^1H) detection. The chemical shifts of the observed signals are reported in parts per million (ppm) relative to tetramethylsilane (TMS), which serves as the internal standard for calibration. This method allows for precise identification and quantification of molecular structures within the samples under investigation.
Results
The results demonstrate the successful synthesis of chiral 2D coordination polymers (c-MOFs) using HATI-conjugated ligands modified with chiral PhEt and NaEt groups. The introduction of these chiral groups via the Mitsunobu reaction resulted in significant molecular distortion, leading to a propeller-like shape in the ligands, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This distortion was further reflected in the formation of chiral 2D c-MOFs, characterized by consistent crystalline structures across different chiral configurations, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis. The interlayer π-π spacings and optimized unit cell parameters were determined, indicating robust structural integrity and stability of the synthesized materials.
Moreover, the chiral 2D c-MOFs exhibited remarkable spin polarization properties, with values reaching up to 96.9% for (S)-Na, attributed to the steric hindrance introduced by the chiral groups. The electrical conductivities were found to be comparable across different samples, suggesting that the chiral substitutions minimally affected the bulk conductivity while enhancing spin selectivity. The pronounced spin polarization was further supported by thickness-dependent measurements, indicating a clear relationship between the chiral structure length and spin polarization efficiency. Overall, the findings highlight the potential of these chiral 2D c-MOFs for applications in spintronic devices, showcasing their high crystallinity, stability, and effective charge transport capabilities.
Discussion
In this study, we present a SICA (Steric-Induced Chirality Amplification) strategy to effectively introduce and enhance chirality in two-dimensional chiral metal-organic frameworks (c-MOFs). By functionalizing π-conjugated HATI ligands with chiral substituents of varying steric bulk and coordinating them with metal ions, we facilitate a significant chirality transfer from the molecular level to the extended 2D structures. Notably, increasing the steric hindrance from chiral phenethyl (PhEt) to chiral naphthylethyl (NaEt) results in a distortion angle increase from $2.3^\circ$ to $7.0^\circ$, which correlates with enhanced chirality amplification. The resulting chiral 2D c-MOFs demonstrate exceptional electrical conductivity and a remarkable spin polarization of $96.9\%$, one of the highest reported for chiral materials.
Future research will focus on synthesizing high-crystallinity chiral 2D c-MOF films and developing high-performance spintronic devices. This design strategy not only establishes a robust foundation for the advancement of chiral organic 2D crystal materials but also opens promising avenues for applications in chiral electronics and spintronics. The methodologies employed, including FT-IR, UV-Vis, PXRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, CD spectroscopy, gas adsorption analysis, XPS, GIWAXS, and electrical conductivity measurements, provide comprehensive insights into the structural and functional properties of the synthesized materials.
