Overview
The transition from fossil fuels to renewable electricity necessitates a significant increase in lithium battery production, which in turn requires enhanced lithium extraction methods. Current techniques for lithium extraction from brines and ores are energy-intensive, as are recycling processes. This study introduces a novel lithium complex, Li\(_5\)L\(_2\), characterized by a sandwich structure where five lithium ions are coordinated between azobipyridine groups of two pentagonal ligands. The unique geometry of these ligands allows for selective binding of Li\(^+\) ions over Na\(^+\) and K\(^+\).
Upon exposure to light, the trans-azobipyridine moieties undergo isomerization to their cis form, facilitating the release of free Li\(^+\) ions as the sandwich structure disassembles. This mechanism enables a cycle for the selective extraction and photostimulated release of Li\(^+\) ions from mixtures containing Na\(^+\) and K\(^+\). The findings suggest that solar energy can be harnessed directly for the purification of lithium, a critical component for efficient energy storage in the context of renewable energy advancements.
