يتم تعريف الشبكة بواسطة متجهات برافيس \( \mathbf{a}_1 = a \left( \frac{1}{2}, \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} \right) \) و \( \mathbf{a}_2 = a \left( -\frac{1}{2}, \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} \right) \)، حيث \( a = \sqrt{3}d \) و \( d \) هو طول رابطة الجار الأقرب، المحدد بـ \( d = 1.42 \) Å.

Overview
In this study, we present theoretical evidence for the emergence of non-trivial topology in a twisted bilayer α-T3 system, despite the monolayer exhibiting topologically trivial properties. Our investigation highlights the interplay between destructive interference arising from the lattice geometry and band folding due to an enlarged unit cell, which collectively influence the band topology in the twisted bilayer configuration. Notably, the alignment with h-BN layers removes the large degeneracy of the emergent flat band in the dice limit, leading to the formation of sub-bands with distinct topological characteristics.
We observe that while the sub-band near charge neutrality behaves trivially, a topologically non-degenerate singular sub-band emerges at a distance from it. This isolated topological band persists over a significant region in the αθ plane, where α represents the hopping ratio and θ denotes the twist angle. Furthermore, we identify multiple phase transitions in this band as a function of α and θ, attributed to hybridization with adjacent bands. To characterize the various emergent topological phases, we analyze the evolution of the hybrid Wannier charge center and the Chern number, thereby supporting our theoretical findings.
Methods
In this section, the authors describe the methods used to analyze the emergent topology of flat bands in a twisted bilayer α-T₃ lattice. The lattice is defined by Bravais vectors \( \mathbf{a}_1 = a \left( \frac{1}{2}, \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} \right) \) and \( \mathbf{a}_2 = a \left( -\frac{1}{2}, \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} \right) \), where \( a = \sqrt{3}d \) and \( d \) is the nearest-neighbor bond length, set to \( d = 1.42 \) Å. The hopping amplitudes between the A and B sublattices are denoted by \( t \), while the hopping between B and C sublattices is represented as \( \alpha t \), with \( \alpha \) varying from 0 (graphene limit) to 1 (dice lattice limit). The next-nearest-neighbor interactions are characterized by \( t_1 \).
The interlayer Hamiltonian is constructed using matrix elements that account for various momentum transfers, represented as \( U(q, q) \). The matrices \( U_{q_b} \), \( U_{q_{tr}} \), and \( U_{q_{tl}} \) correspond to different coupling scenarios, incorporating phase factors \( e^{i\phi} \) where \( \phi = \frac{2\pi}{3} \). The overall interlayer Hamiltonian is expressed as a combination of these matrices, which facilitates the exploration of the topological properties of the system. This methodological framework is crucial for understanding the emergent phenomena in the twisted bilayer α-T₃ lattice.
Discussion
In this section, the evolution of the hybrid Wannier charge center (HWCC) is analyzed within the context of topological systems, particularly focusing on the implications of hybrid Wannier functions (WFs) in one-dimensional (1D) systems. The HWCC is defined as the expectation value of position operators with respect to hybrid WFs, which are localized in one spatial direction while remaining delocalized in others. The relationship between the HWCC and the Berry phase is established, indicating that the evolution of the HWCC as a function of periodic parameters (such as $k_y$ and $k_z$) reveals the topological characteristics of the system. A trivial winding of the WCC corresponds to a Chern number $C = 0$, while a non-trivial winding indicates $C \neq 0$, which is crucial for understanding the edge states in nanoribbon configurations.
The section further elaborates on the numerical analysis of Berry curvature and Chern number using Fukui’s method, emphasizing the importance of discretizing the momentum space to accurately compute these quantities. The results indicate that the Berry curvature hotspots and the Chern number are sensitive to the alignment of h-BN with the twisted bilayer α-T3 lattice, affecting the band structure and topological properties of the non-degenerate flat bands (NFBs). The analysis reveals that varying parameters such as the twist angle and the alignment of the h-BN layers leads to significant changes in the topological characteristics, including band-gap closing and reopening scenarios, which are critical for understanding the electronic properties of the system.
