Overview
The nucleation and growth of solid phases from dissolved species in electrolytes are critical determinants of battery performance, influencing capacity, efficiency, rate capability, stability, and safety. Traditional nucleation-growth models often fall short in accurately representing the dynamics of working cells, particularly in capturing the complexities of asymmetric out-of-plane growth and the finite supply of reactants. This study presents a novel nucleation-growth model that effectively fits potentiostatic nucleation transients by incorporating the effects of reactant depletion, thereby accurately reproducing the characteristic current rise, peak, and decay associated with nucleation without the need for arbitrary adjustments.
The model accommodates both instantaneous and progressive nucleation processes and is applied to the nucleation and growth of lithium sulfide (Li₂S) at a catalyzed electrode from a lithium polysulfide solution. The findings reveal nucleus densities reaching up to \(6.7 \times 10^9 \, \text{cm}^{-2}\) and an effective reaction rate constant of \(1.8 \times 10^{-3} \, \text{s}^{-1}\). Furthermore, the proposed framework has broader applicability, extending to other conversion and metal-deposition chemistries where finite-supply effects are significant.
