Overview

This section describes the identification of a new genus and species, Wadiichthys anbaawyi gen. et sp. nov., from the extinct family Saurodontidae (Ichthyodectiformes), based on a specimen found in the Upper Cretaceous Dakhla Formation in the Western Desert of Egypt. The holotype includes a complete skull with associated jaw elements, embedded in a compacted mudstone layer. Wadiichthys anbaawyi is distinguished from other saurodontid genera by several morphological features, including a longer dorsal margin of the predentary compared to the ventral margin, the presence of longitudinal foramina beneath each alveolus, a small diastema between teeth, a convex contact between the rostrodermethmoid and frontal bones, a triangular-shaped posterior margin of the maxilla, and deeply embedded teeth in the jaw elements.

This discovery marks the first formal description of a saurodontid from Africa, enhancing the understanding of the diversity and paleogeographic distribution of this family. It provides insights into the taxonomy, morphology, and evolutionary history of Cretaceous marine vertebrates in the Tethys Sea. To ensure the preservation and documentation of the fossil, a terrestrial laser scanner (Trimble TX6) was utilized, allowing for the creation of a high-resolution 3D point cloud. This technique not only protects the fossil from potential damage but also facilitates remote collaboration and morphometric analysis without the need for physical handling.
