Discussion
In this study, we explored the effects of short-term relaxation after lithium plating on the capacity recovery of Li | |Gr cells. Our findings revealed that a brief relaxation period post-plating resulted in enhanced capacity retention, contrary to traditional beliefs that such relaxation would lead to detrimental solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) growth. Specifically, we observed that short-term relaxation facilitated the formation of a robust, inorganic-rich SEI, which contributed to a reduction in the surface area of metallic lithium and improved overall capacity retention. In contrast, long-term relaxation primarily resulted in an organic SEI that was less durable and associated with higher capacity decay.
Utilizing in-situ Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), we tracked the morphological and compositional changes of lithium dendrites during the relaxation phase. Our analyses indicated that the redistribution of lithium from dendrite tips to sides during short-term relaxation led to smoother dendritic structures, thereby minimizing the formation of isolated lithium. Furthermore, we validated these observations through ex-situ techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which confirmed the transition of SEI composition from inorganic to organic over time. The practical implications of our findings were demonstrated in fast-charging experiments, where our proposed short-term relaxation strategy significantly improved capacity retention in commercial LiFePO4 batteries, highlighting its potential for real-world applications in enhancing battery performance during rapid charging scenarios.
