Overview
In recent observations, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) identified gamma-ray emissions exceeding 100 TeV from four sources linked to powerful microquasars. This study posits that these microquasars serve as the primary Galactic PeVatrons, and it explores their role in contributing to the proton and gamma-ray fluxes through a comprehensive population model.
The findings indicate that merely ten active powerful microquasars in the Galaxy at any given time can sufficiently explain the proton flux observed around the knee of the cosmic-ray spectrum, while also aligning with existing cosmic-ray and gamma-ray data. Notably, the model accounts for the observed 10 TeV bump and the 300 TeV hardening in the cosmic-ray spectrum, as well as the diffuse background detected by LHAASO at energies above several tens of TeV. This reinforces the hypothesis that a limited number of powerful microquasars are primarily responsible for the acceleration of cosmic rays near the knee.
