Overview

In the context of personal standards, the relationship between adaptive perfectionism and performance has been previously reported (Smith et al., 2019). However, Gaudreau et al. (2022) argue that the failure to distinguish between “excellencism” (the tendency to strive flexibly towards high but achievable standards) and “perfectionism” (the relentless pursuit of idealized, excessively high standards) has led to an underestimation of the maladaptive aspects of perfectionism. To address this, they developed the Scale of Perfectionism and Excellencism (SCOPE), which comprises two factors: excellencism and perfectionism.

The SCOPE serves as a critical benchmark for rigorously assessing perfectionism. Through controlled regression analyses, the effects of excellencism are interpreted as a pure aspiration towards high goals, while the effects of perfectionism, when excellencism is controlled, are associated with an obsession with perfection. Factor analysis of SCOPE confirmed the presence of these two factors, with an inter-factor correlation of $r = 0.50$, highlighting the distinct yet interrelated nature of excellencism and perfectionism in understanding personal standards and their implications for adaptability.
