Overview
In this study, we present an innovative approach to weak signal search experiments that enhances scanning efficiency without sacrificing sensitivity. Traditional methods rely on scanning resonance frequencies over extensive ranges, which is time-consuming. Our accelerated strategy, applied to an alkali-noble-gas spin system, achieves a remarkable 30-fold increase in scanning step size while maintaining an ultrahigh sensitivity of 1.29 fT ⋅ Hz$^{-1/2}$ at approximately 5 Hz, equating to an energy resolution of about $1.8 \times 10^{-23}$ eV ⋅ Hz$^{-1/2}$. This sensitivity is among the highest reported for quantum energy resolutions.
Utilizing this advanced sensor, we conducted searches for axion-like particles (ALPs) and established stringent constraints on their coupling to neutrons and protons within the 4.5-15.5 Hz Compton-frequency range, significantly improving upon previous limits. Our findings suggest that this accelerated scanning technique could be beneficial for other resonant search experiments, particularly in the context of ultralight bosonic dark matter, which is theorized to exist as oscillating fields in galaxies and can couple with standard model particles, generating weak signals detectable in both astrophysical and laboratory settings.
Methods
In the Methods section, the authors detail the experimental setup, emphasizing the principles that govern the manifestation of the Fano effect and its influence on the results obtained. They discuss the stochastic characteristics of ultralight axion dark matter (DM), highlighting how these properties affect the experimental outcomes. Furthermore, the section outlines the statistical methodologies utilized to assess signal sensitivity, along with the post-analysis techniques implemented to differentiate potential axion DM candidates from background noise. This comprehensive approach ensures a robust framework for interpreting the experimental data and identifying viable axion DM signals.
Results
In this study, we conducted a comprehensive search for axion-like particle (ALP) signals using a magnetometer in the Fermi-contact enhanced NMR mode, performing 49 scans over a frequency range of 5-15 Hz with a total measurement duration of 1440 hours. Our approach differed from previous studies by incorporating both x and y axes as sensitive directions, allowing for a more nuanced analysis of the system’s response to magnetic fields and ALPs. We calculated the sensitivity bandwidth and optimal sensitivity frequency, finding that our experimental results align closely with theoretical predictions, differing by only 7%.
Despite identifying several candidate signals that exceeded the 5σ threshold, these were not consistently observed across individual scans, suggesting they may be attributed to transient background fluctuations rather than genuine ALP dark matter signals. Our findings indicate that while we achieved significant sensitivity improvements over prior studies, particularly in the coupling constants for neutrons and protons, we did not detect any ALP dark matter signals. Notably, our results provide stringent constraints on ALP couplings, surpassing astrophysical limits derived from neutron-star cooling in the frequency ranges of 4.6-6.6 Hz and around 7.5 Hz.
Discussion
In this section, the authors discuss the properties of two noise regimes in the context of detecting axion-like particles (ALPs) using a hybrid spin-based sensor. They categorize noise into non-amplifiable noise ($N_{na}$) and amplifiable noise ($N_a$), analyzing the signal at the resonant frequency $f_0$ with an amplification factor $q$. The total noise variance is expressed as $\Sigma(f) = \Sigma_{na} + \Sigma_a(1 + \eta(f))^2 + S(f)$, where $\eta(f)$ is a Lorentzian amplification function. The sensitivity of the signal strength $g_s$ is derived, showing that optimal sensitivity is achieved at $f = f_0$ and follows a Lorentzian profile, with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) sensitivity characterized by $\Gamma_{sen}^{FWHM} \approx 2\sqrt{3}\Gamma\sqrt{1 + \kappa}$, where $\kappa = \frac{q^2 \Sigma_a}{\Sigma_{na}}$.
The authors highlight the differences between the NMR regime and previous search regimes (self-compensation and hybrid-spin resonance). In the NMR regime, the bias magnetic field is tuned to match the dark matter mass, allowing for resonant absorption of dark matter particles, which contrasts with the compensation for magnetic noise in the self-compensation regime. The NMR regime’s asymmetric resonance profile is attributed to the Fano resonance, which significantly influences sensitivity. The authors conclude that while achieving high sensitivity is challenging, increasing the amplification factor can extend measurement bandwidth, providing a pathway for future experiments to enhance sensitivity and broaden search ranges for ALP dark matter.
