Overview
This research letter presents the inaugural measurement of photonuclear D⁰ meson production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions, utilizing lead-lead collision data with an integrated luminosity of 1.34 nb⁻¹ from the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.36 TeV. The photonuclear events are identified by detecting neutron emissions from the breakup of one nucleus while the other remains intact, alongside a requirement for minimal particle activity in a significant rapidity interval towards the photon-emitting nucleus.
The D⁰ mesons are reconstructed through the decay channel D⁰ → K⁻π⁺, and the cross section is measured as a function of the D⁰ meson’s transverse momentum and rapidity. The findings are compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations that utilize recent parametrizations of lead nuclear parton distribution functions, as well as predictions from the color glass condensate framework. This measurement is significant as it characterizes the parton distribution functions of lead nuclei for parton fractional momenta \( x \) ranging from approximately \( 10^{-4} \) to \( 10^{-2} \) across various hard energy scale \( Q^2 \) selections.
