Overview
In this study, we investigate the filamentary substructure of 3.3 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission observed by JWST/NIRCam in the starburst-driven wind of M 82. Our analysis reveals plume-like structures within the PAH emission, characterized by widths of approximately 50 pc and lengths extending 200-300 pc. Notably, around 70% of the PAH emission in this region is associated with these plumes, which also contain smaller ‘clouds’ ranging from 5 to 15 pc in width. These clouds exhibit morphological similarities to those predicted by ‘cloud-crushing’ simulations, and we estimate their survival time-scales to be between 0.5 and 3 Myr, suggesting they endure breakout from the disc rather than succumbing to the hot wind.
Additionally, we find a strong correlation between PAH emission and Pa α emission (from Hubble Space Telescope data) at both plume and cloud scales, although the PAH-to-Pa α ratio increases with distance from the mid-plane. Our findings indicate that PAH emission in the outflow reaches a local minimum in areas of high X-ray brightness, supporting the notion that cold gas in galactic outflows is launched through hierarchically structured plumes. The survival of smaller clouds within these larger plume structures enhances their resilience to the surrounding wind environment.
Discussion
In this section, the authors discuss the methodology and findings related to the analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions in the central region of the starburst galaxy M 82, utilizing data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam. The study focuses on the F335M filter, which captures the PAH feature at 3.3 μm, and employs F250M and F360M filters to assess the continuum. The authors highlight the importance of spatial resolution in observing PAH emissions, which can trace colder gas in the outflow at parsec scales. They note that while the 3.3 μm flux is sensitive to grain size and ionization states, it cannot be solely used as a dust mass tracer due to uncertainties in its conversion to PAH mass in outflow environments.
The analysis reveals significant filamentary structures, termed “plumes,” extending from the mid-plane of M 82, with a notable asymmetry between the northern and southern outflows. The authors identify coherent peaks in PAH emission that correlate with other tracers, such as CO and Pa α emissions, suggesting a complex interaction between different phases of the outflow. The study also emphasizes the hierarchical nature of the PAH emission, with smaller-scale features referred to as “clouds” existing within the larger plumes. The findings indicate that approximately 70% of the flux beyond the central region is associated with these plumes, which may serve as primary channels for transporting PAHs and cold gas away from the galaxy’s disc. The authors conclude that their observations provide insights into the dynamics of outflows in starburst galaxies and the role of PAHs in tracing cold gas structures.
