Overview

In this study, the authors investigate the role of orbital currents in controlling magnetization in thin-film ferromagnets, specifically focusing on ferrimagnetic GdyCo100-y alloys. They demonstrate that the injection of an orbital current generates significant orbital torques, with both the sign and magnitude of these torques being adjustable through variations in Gd content and temperature. Notably, the effective spin-orbital Hall angle in a GdyCo100-y/CuOx bilayer reaches -0.25, which is substantially higher than the values observed in Co/CuOx (+0.03) and GdyCo100-y/Pt (+0.13).

The enhanced performance is attributed to the local orbital-to-spin conversion occurring at Gd sites, which is approximately five times stronger and exhibits an opposite sign compared to Co. Additionally, the authors report a considerable increase in net orbital torque at lower temperatures, linked to improved conversion efficiency resulting from the magnetic ordering of the Gd and Co sublattices. These findings highlight the potential of manipulating orbital currents for effective magnetization control in ferromagnetic materials.

Discussion

In this study, we investigate the dependence of the orbital-to-spin conversion efficiency, denoted as $\xi_{DL}^E$, on the magnetic ordering of Gd and Co sublattices in Gd$_y$Co$_{100-y}$/CuO$_x$ bilayers. Our findings reveal that $\xi_{DL}^E$ is significantly enhanced in Gd$_{23}$Co$_{77}$/CuO$_6$ at 20 K, being approximately twice that of Gd$_{23}$Co$_{77}$/Pt$_5$. The effective spin-orbital Hall angle, $\xi_{DL}^j = \xi_{DL}^E \rho$, shows a notable increase from -0.02 at 300 K to -0.25 at 20 K in the CuO$_x$ sample, contrasting with the nearly constant value of 0.13 in the Pt sample. Additionally, the resistance of the bilayers decreases by 10% and 30% across the same temperature range, respectively.

Our results indicate that the orbital torque in these ferrimagnetic alloys can be finely tuned, as $\xi_{DL}^E$ exhibits a monotonic decrease with increasing Gd content. This behavior is attributed to the efficient orbital-to-spin conversion facilitated by Gd atoms, which possess negative spin-orbit coupling. Importantly, both $\xi_{DL}^E$ and the effective spin-orbital Hall angle are significantly enhanced at lower temperatures, underscoring the critical role of magnetic order in the Gd and Co sublattices. These observations not only elucidate the mechanisms underlying orbital-to-spin conversion at an atomic level but also suggest a versatile approach to engineer orbital torque in ferrimagnets, thereby maximizing their efficiency for potential applications.
